Inshore Skipper
As a skipper you can sail a boat up to 24 metres in coastal waters up to 20 miles, both day and night.
The course includes a briefing and a radio communications exam (VHF/SRC).
You will gain knowledge of sailboat construction, sail handling skills, and learn how to operate the instruments. Gain an understanding of anchoring and mooring. You will keep day and night watch throughout the passage and log 500 nautical miles in your logbook.
Programme of practical lessons at captains' courses
Rigging: standing and running, knots, bays, proper handling of ends and cranes.
Sail handling, setting and retracting sails, principle of sails, terminology, reefing
Appointment and use of rescue equipment: life raft, life jackets and safety belts, fire extinguishers, first aid kit, rocket launchers.
Engine inspection and maintenance, marine equipment
Fundamentals of yacht control under engine and sails, courses of the yacht, leading and stalling, tacking, full courses, turns, roll and trim.
Man overboard practice, anchoring.
Operation of the dinghy, use of VHF radio, radio conversations.
Approaching and leaving the berth, mooring to the buoy, steering the yacht in narrow places, mooring to the berth in the current along the berth and across, mooring on springs, /if possible/.
Working with charts and logs, navigation, drawing up a sailing plan, selecting an anchorage.
Checking in the yacht, galley, provisions and housekeeping, assigning crew roles.
