Remember the moment you came to the helm during the IYT Bareboat Skipper exam? And how did the heart beat and the adrenaline went off scale when they received the coveted license of a skipper? Now I can’t even believe that you could worry then. The track record of the “sea” list includes independent trips to different countries, friendly regattas and steep flotillas, many marinas are studied, the choice of a yacht is no longer a problem. By ourselves, we know that it is at this stage of practice that I want to climb a new level of skill! Thinking about the fact that it is time to change the status of an amateur to a professional? Then again welcome aboard!

YM Coastal: New Opportunities for Yachtsmen
Much has not been studied and much remains to be done! IYT Yachtmaster Coastal is the next level of skill, it will allow you to plan longer transitions, schedule long sea voyages, overcome the path in different weather conditions (up to 8BF), day and night. These first night hikes! Always a little jealous of future captains. Yacht Master - it sounds proud!

Who is ready to learn?
You can apply for the course if you already have minimal marine experience:
- you spent at least 30 days and 800nm at sea;
- you have experience of a skipper for at least 48 hours;
- You spent more than 12 hours in night shifts;
- your experience has been documented, that is, official marks have been made in your logbook.

Not enough experience yet, but eager to learn new knowledge? We have two news for you. Good - you can take training and pass the exam! The second one is also good - you will receive your certificate, though a little later, when you follow all the standards. But right after - full speed ahead!

PROGRAM

What is included in the course?
During training at IYT Yachtmaster Coastal we work with electronic navigation and navigation maps, study pilotage, learn more about safety at sea, tidal currents, meteorology, tides and their calculations. The course program includes work with the crew, navigational plotting using the Kruys-bearing method, reckoning, MPPSS-72, stages of planning long-distance sea voyages. All this is useful, theory and practice will be required during night crossings, discrepancies with ships and other maritime stories that every yachtsman encounters.
Remember that going up to the deck and going out to sea, you should not only know your abilities and “feel” the yacht well, but also not forget about external factors - weather conditions, water area, ship condition, traffic density and more. The selection of crew is also important: composition, strength, level of training and personal qualities. In the open sea, there is nothing secondary. IYT Yachtmaster Coastal is not only theory and practice, but also management - training captains for crew management.

How is the training going?
Demanding and friendly. The training takes place in several countries at once - for the course we chose a passage through the Caribbean islands - Martinique, St. Louis, St. Vincent and others (about 500 nautical miles). The crew includes our full-time instructor captain and M Coastal candidates who have challenged themselves. These are those who are ready to prove that they are capable of more. We will learn how to plan a trip, lay the most suitable route, pick up marinas and parking places, focus on the weather, understand the nature, distribute tasks within the crew and plan shifts. An important part is the establishment of comfortable relationships between crew members. Accept and understand: in this trip, your main person, coach, mentor and leader is the captain of the vessel, in the sea voyage his main task is not only to teach, but also to ensure safety. You still have it, but for now it’s worth adopting invaluable experience!

How is the exam going?
You have a combined exam - it consists of oral and practical parts (work on a yacht during a trip). By the end of the course, you should confidently steer the yacht and give competent commands to the crew in various situations encountered during the trip. Mooring, anchoring, departure from the berth and work with sails - the minimum set of practice that you need to apply in the exam. You also have to show skills in drawing up a transition plan, preparing a yacht and crew, and much more.
