Sailing to Antarctica. Stage 2: Rio Gallegos - Ushuaia

Two hundred years ago, an expedition to the Southern Ocean under the command of F. Bellingshausen and M. Lazarev started from Kronstadt. The purpose of the expedition is to prove or disprove the presence of the continent in the region of the south pole of the Earth. Bellingshausen led the sloop Vostok, and Lazarev led the sloop Mirny. The crew of both ships totaled 190 people. In January 1820, the expedition reached the shores, completely covered with a multimeter layer of ice. It was Antarctica!

We are on the verge of the 200th anniversary of one of the greatest geographical discoveries. And we are not going to celebrate this event while sitting on the couch and eating out the New Year Olivier. We will sail under the footsteps of Bellingshausen and Lazarev.

We offer to participate in the ANTARKTID2020 yacht project - a national patriotic project for the reconstruction of the great sailing of the discoverers of Antarctica, carried out at the expense of the participants, in which several sailing yachts take part. We provide a pre-Antarctic section of the Xanadu route - from Buenos Aires to the southernmost city of our planet Ushuaia.

Almost every one of you can take part in this campaign! But do not forget that this is not an ordinary sailing; it is an expedition with clearly defined goals, and our task is to maintain the schedule despite the weather and any adverse conditions and incidents.

The second stage from Rio Gallegos to Ushuaia, lasting about 350 miles, can easily turn into an attempt to go around Cape Horn. Yes, this is an extra 200 miles, but just imagine that there are hardly more people who circled Cape Horn under sail than those who climbed Mount Everest. And you can fall into their number!

Events schedule

  • Expeditions to Antarctica often depart from Rio Gallegos. We will do it too. Rio Gallegos is the administrative center of the Argentinean province of Santa Cruz, in Patagonia. The city is located at the mouth of the Gallegos River and bears her name. Rio Gallegos is one of the windiest cities on earth. Wind power can reach 100 km / h! Now Rio Gallegos is one of the most developed cities in Argentina. Tourists are interested in the city, first of all, because of their proximity to the Los Glaciaros National Natural Park, part of the Patagonian ice sheet.

  • Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra del Fuego and the southernmost city in the world. Now it is a popular tourist center. Most expeditions to Antarctica depart from here, so there are many specialized stores. Among the interesting sights are the building of the former military prison, the Presidio Museum, the Museum of the End of the World, which is dedicated to the flora and fauna of this area, as well as the Yaman Museum.
