Travel Petrozavodsk - Lodeinoe Pole

We will begin our trek in the capital of Karelia - Petrozavodsk, visit the island of Kizhi, walk along Lake Onega and finish our trek to the Svir, the river connecting Onega and Ladoga.

The main attraction of this hike is Kizhi.

Kizhi is the most fabulous and unusual island of the entire Russian North. The austere, cold landscape has been transformed by unique monuments of wooden architecture - amazing churches with carved scaly domes. This Karelian island has turned into a working miracle, a "living" attraction available for acquaintance and visiting.

Kizhi is small in size: only a kilometer wide and about 5 km long. Nevertheless, it was here that the Kizhi Pogost was built - a complex of two churches and bell towers. In 1966, Kizhi received the status of an open-air architectural and historical museum. Since this year, other surviving houses, temples and outbuildings from Zaonezhie and other zones of Karelia have been transported to the island. For over 20 years, Kizhi has been filled with life and has become more like a village lost in time than a museum. Shortly thereafter, in 1990, the island established itself as a World Heritage Site.

Anyone can get acquainted with the life of a bygone time, try themselves in folk crafts and see how master woodcarvers create real works of art from an ordinary bar of aspen.

Kizhi is open to everyone who is not afraid to touch its unusual beauty. The island continues to transform, annually replenishing with new historical monuments and interesting buildings.
