Yachtmaster Offshore Training IYT

The IYT Worldwide Yachtmaster Offshore certificate is a recreational certificate of competency to command sailing and/or power vessels up to 24 metres in length up to 150 nm offshore. It is a comprehensive theory and live aboard course consisting of five days classroom theory and a practical component of six days including the practical on the water examination. The minimum age to obtain this certification is 18.

Candidates must either hold a recognised VHF Radio Operators Certificate or must take the full IYT VHF-SRC Marine Communications course 

IYT’s Yachtmaster Offshore Sail Certificate covers command of a sailing vessel with a sail area of greater than 80 square metres/861 square feet. 

Certificate limitations:

  • Command of a vessel up to 24 meters in length
  • up to 150 miles offshore
  • not for commercial use

The minimum entry requirements to apply for the IYT Yachtmaster Offshore course:

  • 50 days on board a yacht at sea as an active crew member. 
  • Have logged 3,000 miles in a yacht while cruising at sea 
  • Thirty hours on watch at night underway as an active member of a yacht’s crew. 
  • A current medical examination and a colour blindness eyesight examination
  • A six-hour VHF Radio Operators course covering the general rules and procedures for the safe operation of a VHF marine radio.

Minimum sea time must have been met prior to the final examination.
